Having built a couple of homes and being closely involved with some others, I’d like to share my experiences and thoughts of my first steel-frame house. I am not an architect, designer or builder, so take my comments entirely as a customer. In many ways, this is a review of the builders or contractors I used. My son also built a similar steel-frame house some months earlier, so I have included some of his learnings too.

Turn-Key Packages
If I had my time again, I would have opted for a turn-key house and land package. Such home building companies have the land and they build your home on it, including fencing, concreting and landscaping. If you are like the majority of home builders, you will know how much time and aggravation is caused when you have to organise fencing and landscaping/concreting yourself.
The downside of such packages is that you might have fewer options than buying your own block of land and then finding a customisable design that will fit on it. Enough said, as this site is about home building choices and not a turn-key purchase.
